My poor Irish cousins (one an immigrant) went from Charlestown, NH to San Francisco in 1876, some time after June 1. I'm guessing they went by train because they were inland and one of them worked on the railroad. However, when a very poor one returned east he said he earned his "passage," a word more commonly associated with ships. What was the most likely form on transportation (train, ship)and what did each cost at the time?
