The doubt expressed in the newspapers of San Francisco about whether the Rockwell and Hurlburt troupe was aboard is not to be found in the newspapers of Victoria, where the troupe had just been playing (to very favourable reviews). The body of Jack Crowley, the advance man, washed up here, and that of the wonderful white horse, Mazeppa, was seen floating in the Straits of Juan de Fuca, with a saddle attached. A trunk of horse-training paraphernalia was also retreived. Crowley is not your ancestor, but it does seem very likely the others were also aboard, as sources here believed.
By the way, it was the Orpheus that ran aground, in Barclay Sound. The Pacific split in two and sank, south of Cape Flattery.
If you haven't already done so, you might like to read Lewis and Dryden's Marine History of the Pacific Northwest, for an account of the event, though there's nothing about your ancestor there. In the Daily Oregonian of Nov. 17, 1875, p. 1, there's a story about an incident at Salem, involving a swindler, a scuffle, a fine paid by Rockwell, and an ambush. Avoiding possible bloodshed, the troupe headed to Victoria instead of following their planned agenda, because of this incident. There's also a book, which can be read on-line, that mentions Malcolm Douglas Hurlburt and Rockwell, and tells a little of their doings. Google History of the Town of Coventry, by Oliver P. Judd, click on chapter VIII, and read about the fairs.
As you see, I've been researching the wreck, and Malcolm Douglas Hurlburt, among others. Do you have any other information on the man and the troupe? Do you know, for instance, who D. P. Hurlburt was, in relation to Malcolm Douglas? Are you, perhaps, descended from D. P.? I know he was a horse-trainer, and he turned up in San Francisco on the 18th, but that's all I know. If you have anything at all, however unlikely or unrelated, I'd love to hear it.
