Services Set For Newsman
NOVATO (UPI) Ė Funeral services will be held Friday for Elmont T. (Monty) Waite, a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle for the past 23 years who specialized in transit stories.
Waite died in is sleep Wednesday at his Novato home. He was 63.
A native of Walthill, Neb., who worked on dailies in Nebraska, Oklahoma and Kansas after his graduation from the University of Nebraska in 1931, Waite was a war correspondent in the Pacific during World War II for the Associated Press.
He covered the Battle of the Coral Sea, the assault landings at Okinawa and Peleliu and General Douglas MacArthurís return to the Philippines.
He joined the Chronicle in 1949 and in recent years covered transit stories, including the building of the Bay Area Rapid Transit System and the Golden Gate Bridge and Highway District.
Waite is survived by his wife, Arlene, his mother, two sons, a daughter and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Keatonís Chapel of Marin in Novato with burial at Marin Memorial Gardens. The family asked that contributions be made to the Heart Association.
