Jansje M. Houweling
Cable television pioneer

Jansje Martina Houweling of Sausalito, who helped bring cable television to Sausalito, died Saturday, Dec. 15, 1990, at CareWest Bayside Convalescent Hospital in Greenbrae.

She was 84.

Mrs. Houweling was a native of Holland.

She came to the United States in 1949 and settled in Sausalito.

With her husband, the late Martin J. Houweling, she started Jeannette’s Grocery in Sausalito.

The couple also worked in the theater business, doing electrical, technical and projection jobs fro cinemas.

They managed several apartments and a medical building in Sausalito.

In 1951, the couple founded Martin’s Cable TV System in Sausalito. They laid much of the city’s television cable for the system, which they eventually sold.

Mrs. Houweling loved gardening, music and travel.

Her husband died in 1984.

Survivors include her son, Jan Houweling of Yountville, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mount Tamalpais Mortuary and Cemetery.

The family prefers memorial gifts to the Marin General Hospital Heart Fund.
