Kathleen Cassidy Doyle Heersema
A third generation Californian of proud Irish heritage, Kathleen Cassidy Doyle Heersema died at Nazareth House in San Rafael on May 13, 2002. Although she was born in Los Angeles, she was, at heart, a true native San Franciscan. She was educated at the Convent of The Holy Names in Oakland. A proud Stanford alumna, she received a BA in Classics and a MA in Modern Languages. She was Women's Editor of the San Francisco Examiner, 1954-1967; Deputy Director of the Peace Corps in Panama, 1967-1969. In 1961 she was appointed by Governor Edmund G. Brown to the first California Commission on the Status of Women. Kathleen Cassidy was married to the late Richard E. Doyle in 1933. She married the late Dr. Philip H. Heersema in 1969. A devoted mother and grandmother, she is survived by her four children: Kathleen Ellen Maunder of Portland, Oregon, R. Stephen Doyle (Adriel) of San Francisco, Brenda Doyle Crane (the late Jim Crane) of Austin, Texas, and Micaela Doyle of San Rafael. She also leaves her seven grandchildren: Michael Maunder (Staci), Mark Maunder (Krista), Lauren Kim (Shon), Erin Doyle Corbo (Christopher), Katie Doyle Ventimiglia (Michael), Duffy Doyle Keever (Graham), and Cassidy Doyle. She is also survived by six great grandchildren. Kathleen was a gifted writer, an exceptional wordsmith, a passionate and loyal friend. Her unwavering discipline, intellectual curiosity, sense of humor, and joie de vivre, will be missed by all who knew her. A Memorial Mass will be held at Old St. Mary's Church, (California at Grant Sts. in San Francisco), on Monday, May 20, 2002 at 10:30 AM. A Mass will also be held at Nazareth House on Friday, May 17, 2002 at 9:30 AM.
