Hobson E. “Hob” Ferguson, 84, of Marinwood, retired founder of a nationally known management consulting firm, died Monday night at his home after an illness.

For more than a quarter of a century Hobson headed the firm which served such clients as Matson Navigation Co., Southern Pacific, New York Central, Denver and Rio Grande and Western Pacific railroads.

Other clients included the Bechtel Corp., the U. S. Small Business Administration, the Army Corps of Engineers and Air Force.

Hobson, known as a pioneer in the field of human relations training in industry, retired from the firm, Hobson Ferguson and Associates, about six years ago.

He was a native of Lynn, MO who started his career as a teacher and high school principal.

At the start of World War II he joined Kaiser Shipbuilding Co. in Richmond as a shipwright, then became training director and later superintendent of employee relations. He was then invited to join the staff at the University of California as an instructor in engineering, science and management training program.

Hobson was known as an ardent fly fisherman in the rivers of Northern California, Oregon and Washington.

Hobson had been a resident of California since 1929 and Marin since 1956.

Surviving are his wife, Edith of Marinwood; a brother, Rhey Ferguson, and three sisters, Pearl Mossman, Ruby Ferguson and Gussie Goebel, all of Missouri. At his request no funeral services will be held.

The family prefers that memorial contributions be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children in San Francisco or Hospice of Marin.
