Almer O. Askim of Petaluma, a longtime resident of Marin and Southern Sonoma counties, died at a local hospital yesterday after a lengthy illness. He was 83.
Askim was born in Minnesota and was reared and educated there. He moved to California in 1943, settling in Novato. For many years he was a carpenter at Hamilton Air Force Base, retiring in 1966. He and his late wife, Lyda, moved to Petaluma in 1959. She died in 1962.
Askim is survived by five sons, Caryl Askim of Petaluma, Alan, Charles and Bruce Askim, all of Novato, and Curtis Askim of Santa Rosa; three daughters, Donnabel Smith and Myrtle Bergala, both of Novato, and Joyce Ranger of Minnesota; two brothers, George and Arthur Askim, both of Minnesota; five sisters, Ida Lunstrom, Hazel Cook, and Alice Ritmire, all of Minnesota, Bernice Boeger of Texas and Edith Bieck of Florida; 31 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the Sorensen Funeral Home in Petaluma, with Rev. J. Murray Elrod, of Novato Grace Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Cypress Hill Memorial Park, Petaluma.
