Memorial services for Lawrence “Lefty” Hagar Arndt, longtime West Marin resident and a fixture in Point Reyes Station, will be Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Inverness Yacht Club. He died Dec. 7 at Marin General Hospital in Greenbrae. He was 88.

Mr. Arndt was born in Santa Cruz and remained in the Bay Area for much of his life. He was a commercial fisherman on one of many trips through Point Reyes Station when he met his wife, Adeline, in the late 1930s. They were married in 1940.

During World War II, he was stationed on a barge moored in Drakes Bay while serving in the U.S. Navy. A skilled fisherman, he made fishing and cargo nets and was known for the abalone-shell poles poking through the air outside his home. He also worked in construction. He worked on a number of projects, including the shopping center in Point Reyes Station. He opened a saw-sharpening business in 1974. In 1977, Mr. Arndt, interested in fish conservation, lost a battle for a seat on the Marin County Conservation District board.

He is survived by his wife, Adeline “Sis” Arndt of Point Reyes Station; son, Otto “Pat” Arndt of Point Reyes Station; daughter, Adeline “Sissy” Dreesman of Los Gatos; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Tomales Bay Association, West Marin Senior Services or to Sister Jane Mast, SHF, Pastoral Ministry, 23233 Lyons Ave., Santa Clarita 91321.
