Collegian Dies From Auto Crash

A College of Marin student died yesterday in Place County Hospital in Auburn as a result of injuries suffered Sunday in an auto accident while en route home from a tobaganning trip to the Sierra.

He was William D. Berlew Jr., 21, of Residence 4, San Quentin, whose father is a correctional officer at the prison.

Berlew was a passenger in a car driven by Mary Bettencourt, 19, of 187 Butterfield Road, San Anselmo, which crashed near Baxter. Miss Bettencourt, who suffered a pelvic fracture in the accident, was transferred yesterday from the Auburn hospital to Ross General Hospital, where her condition was described today as satisfactory.

The California Highway Patrol said their car left Highway 80 while rounding a slight curve and plunged into a deep culvert. The crash happened about 11 p.m. and officers believed Miss Bettencourt fell asleep while driving.

Berlew was a first-year student at the college, majoring in business administration. He was a 1966 graduate of San Rafael High School and an Air Force veteran.

Born in Berkeley, he was a resident of Marin 18 years.

Surviving are his parents, William D. and Helen A. Berlew, with whom he lived.

Requiem Mass will be offered at 9”30 a.m. Monday at St. Raphael’s Church in San Rafael. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery. The Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. tomorrow in the chapel of Keaton’s Mortuary, San Rafael
