Marin Pioneer Dies in Eureka
Jacob Nelson, who came to Marin County in 1849 and made his home with the late John Strain at Bolinas, died at the County Hospital in Humboldt County last Friday at the age of 91 years. He remained in Marin County until 1885 when he went to Humboldt County to reside. He was a native of Norway and when a boy went to sea. So far as known, he had no relatives in this country, but was a friend of the Strains and of Mrs. Jesse Colwell of this city.
It is stated that Nelson went to sea when only 8 years of age, and followed the sea until 1847, when he landed at Monterey. Soon after that he went to the mines, and later located at Bolinas. He was ship-wrecked seven times.
Two years ago he was admitted as a ward of the County Hospital, and while there his wants were carefully looked after by the Native Sons, who also took charge of his funeral.
