Quentin Con Found Dead By Hanging

Owen Oliver Jones, 30-year-old prisoner from Los Angeles was found dead in his cell at San Quentin shortly before noon today, Prison Warden H. O. Teets said.

Jones, who was allowed to return to his cell during the morning, was found hanging in his cell from a pair of trousers. Investigations of the death are underway by prison officials and Marin Coroner Frank J. Keaton.

Teets said he knew of no reason for the action because Jones “was in no trouble that we knew about.” Jones was last seen at 9 a.m. and was allowed to return to his cell as he was not assigned to a work detail. His cellmate was at work. Teets said that regular cell inspections are not made during the work day by prison correctional officers.

The prisoner was first sent to San Quentin in April, 1950, from Los Angeles County. He had convictions of grand theft and burglary on his record. Jones was assigned to California Institution for Men at Chino in August, 1950, and escaped in 1951.

He was caught and returned to San Quentin later in 1951.
