Death of Indian Convict

A young Indian named Grover Clark died in San Quentin prison last Wednesday, May 8th. Two months ago he was committed for robbery done in Merced. The boy was only nineteen and a prison sentence for an Indian youth is usually equivalent to capital punishment. This child of the forest lived in confinement just two months and two days before he succumbed to consumption. We canít have adjustable laws, different men convicted of identical crimes are not equally guilty and the same punishment falls with unequal severity upon diverse offenders. A penalty that would fatten a Malay would kill an Indian.
